The last big festival of the year finally announces the bulk of its lineup.
November 6 - 13.
If anyone is in the LA area, you should go. Heaven Knows What is so good—it’s annoying how good the film is.

Wishing I could see Queen and Country again. It was so good. These gifs bring it all back. Not all of his films are something you can put on and relax too (X-Men maybe? Byzanitum?) but this is one of them.
Queen and Country, directed and written by John Boorman (possibly his last.) and it’s a spoilery review so the rest is behind the cut.
Me at the Queen and Country Screening - NYff14
I will post my review in another post incase you’re not interested in me playing Fan again.
The movie was being screened at Walter Reade Theater, which doesn’t have the glamour (or the aisle space, lol) of Alice Tully Hall but still it’s a great theater. The entrance is on the second level and there were tables and chairs outside. Once again I got there early and hung out, finished a book for work, and watched Viggo Mortensen smoke a cigarette after his event.
Eventually I joined the Ticket Holder line, which was outside by the box office. It’s about 8:40 ish (movie to start at 9:15) and more and more people join the line. I am chatting with a few of the people on it, asking what they had seen during the festival. I mention Caleb Jones and they didn’t know who he was, most of them were fans of the first film, Hope and Glory. As I explain who he is, I see Caleb Jones walking with some people up to the box office area. I see it is Arielle Holmes and eventually the Safdie Brothers. (Ron Bronstein, cowriter of HKW and filmmaker in his own right, was projecting the film, I found out later.) I thought that was really sweet that they came. All were very amiable, Caleb was smoking. I asked Arielle for an autograph because if she will be a star, I should ask now right? lol. She was very nice.
There was some confusion about lines (there was a line forming inside as well as out) but it was all sorted out and in we went—I was happy, it was getting chilly. Seating was pick your own and I have never been to the Walter Reade so I didn’t know what was a good seat but I figured close and center was good if I wanted to try for pictures (which I didn’t end up doing) so I think I was in the 7-8th row? I look around to see if the reserved seats several rows behind me were for the cast—they weren’t—so I just shrugged. A few minutes later Josh Safdie enters the row infront of me and plops down into the seat before me but over one, to the right. I was like damn, no way. I casually just lean over and say how I saw Heaven Knows What last Thursday and what an amazing film it was (all true). I told him I follow and his brother on Twitter, etc. He remembered me! And I was slightly embarrassed by that but I said I just was so curious about the film.. etc. He laughed. Josh is A-OK with me. I have to stop being such a fan geek.
Arielle sat next to Josh, and Caleb joined them after the Introduction. That was good, I knew there wasn’t going to be a Q&A (Thank God, I got out of the film so late anyway) but Vanessa Kirby, Caleb and the producer spoke a lot about Boorman and filming. The producer asked Caleb about Broken Dreams and he said it was about *magic* but that he really didn’t want to talk about that film—I assumed because he wanted to keep it on this film, which he seemed very proud of. Someone in the audience shouted “We love you Caleb!” and Caleb laughed and replied “I love me too.” Vanessa didn’t read for Dawn at first, but they thought she would be better as Dawn and Caleb chimed in “Yes, thank God. Because she’s hot”.. something like that. It was funny. Then it was movie time.
I was very focused on the film, but heard Caleb during the movie. He laughed more than anyone else in the theater, and I thought that was sweet.
It was a good night.
